Developer Tapbots on Monday pushed out an update to its popular iOS Twitter client Tweetbot for iOS, bringing playback support for videos and GIFs hosted by the ubiquitous microblogging network.
With Tweetbot 3 for Twitter version 3.5.2, users can now view videos uploaded to Twitter's recently released video hosting service that rolled out in January.
I sincerely hope Tweetbot 6 offers a one time unlock in the future. Poking around the app, most of the UI looks the same but with some extra polish and Twitter v2 API stuff added in. Happily, Tweetbot 5 still works great and is able to be re-downloaded since Tweetbot 6 is a separate app.
According to the release notes, version 3.5.2 also provides better support for viewing animated GIF files uploaded to Twitter's servers.

While current users are still unable to upload videos and GIFs directly to Twitter, Tweetbot features hooks into comparable services like Instagram, CloudApp and Droplr. Those looking use Twitter's hosting service are currently limited to the platform's official app, which lets users capture, edit and upload videos up to 30 seconds long.
Finally, Tweetbot's latest update packs in an assortment of unnamed bug fixes and performance improvements.
Tweetbot for iPhone 3.5.2 is a 7.2MB download that can be purchased for $4.99 from the iOS App Store. The update is free for existing users.

Start with this tweet from Paul Haddad, maker of Tweetbot:
Not sure if its a new App Store rule, or just whichever reviewer we got, but they requested that we remove Tweetbot 5 from sale within 30 days of Tweetbot 6 going live. — Paul Haddad (@tapbot_paul) January 26, 2021
And by request I mean wouldn’t approve until we agreed. Was going to anyways, but just FYI.
Saw this, went to the App Store, typed in Tweetbot, found nothing but a long list of competing products. No Tweetbot, no Tweetbot 5, no Tweetbot 6.

Searched again right before I wrote this, found hints (the grayed text completion that suggests as you type) for Tweetbot 5, which took me to a competing Twitter client’s page. Tweetbot 6 took me to an “early access” page.

This is certainly confusing. Michael Tsai rolled up a number of clarifying comments on his blog, worth a look if you are a dev interested in this issue, especially if you are exploring the possibility of moving to a subscription model.
